Mandy Woo is a composer, producer, and music educator from Toronto, Canada. Fascinated since young by the power of music to convey emotions and tell stories, Mandy is passionate about bringing listeners to a different time and space.
Mandy's music has been heard on CBC Radio's Big City, Small World and The Strombo Show as well as on AM1430 Fairchild Radio. She scored the music for Sandwich, premiered at 48 Hour Film Project (Toronto, 2019), and F-O-R-M Festival’s commissioned piece Wave Hands Like Clouds (Vancouver, 2018). As a performer, Mandy has shared the stage with Robotaki, Featurette, Goodbye Honolulu, and Jon Neufeld of Starfield. She was a regional finalist for CBC Searchlight twice (2016, 2017), participated in the 2016 Orchestral Reading Session hosted by The Screen Composers Guild of Canada, and was a finalist for the Fairchild Radio Toronto Song-Writers Quest (2015). Her curiosity with sonic spaces and musical storytelling led to postmoderndisco, a personal outlet for exploring ambient soundscapes. She has performed these dreamy soundscapes with various live band arrangements, from vocals and guitar, to more eccentric features such as French Horn, violin and clarinet, at venues such as the Hard Rock Cafe, Toronto Pearson International Airport, Trinity Bellwoods, Aga Khan Museum, Chinese Cultural Center, Chinatown Centre and Lee’s Palace. She has also performed at events such as Nuit Blanche, Night It Up, AsialiciousTO, Nookfest, Taste of Kingston, Queen West Art Crawl, and Canadian Music Week.
Mandy is a graduate of the University of Toronto (B.Mus. in Composition) and Queen's University (B.Ed. in Intermediate/Senior Instrumental Music and History) and holds an ARCT in piano performance from The Royal Conservatory of Music. In 2021, Mandy was mentored by Janal Bechthold as part of the Screen Composers of Canada Mentorship program. In August, she participated in the Toronto Strings Composition Workshop with the Grenadier String Quartet. In September, Mandy performed with the postmoderndisco band at the A World Away Music Festival in Toronto, hosted by Young Emerging Artists. Mandy was one of ten participants in the 2021 SOCAN Screen Music Laboratory for Emerging Composers, funded by Bell Media and The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television. Recent projects include short films Fishbowl (trailer here) and perennials (Reel Asian International Film Festival 2022 world premiere here), Gisele's Mashup Adventures, running on CBC Gem and CBC Tv from February 2023 onwards, and video game Andara, available on Steam.
